"Russian businessman Andrei Urzhumtsev has spent eight years of his life traveling on the back of a motorcycle.
He has visited almost every country in Europe and Asia, once covering 16,000 kilometers in Europe in a single month,
and completed a two-week, 7,300-kilometer tour across the United States. Mr. Urzhumtsev chooses routes rarely traveled by tourists.
When preparing for his journeys, Mr. Urzhumtsev does not prepare an itinerary in advance. Instead, he decides which places he will visit when he is already on the road. He sometimes has to adjust his plans, depending on the destination. For example, Mr. Urzhumtsev says he had to leave his motorcycle in Russia for his trip to the United States: it would have been more expensive to transport his bike than buy a new one. He advises those who want to drive across America to opt for a Harley-Davidson: Americans love this legendary motorcycle and are always eager to help someone riding it.
According to Mr Urzhumtsev, the safest countries for travelling are Germany, Italy and France. However, he recommends that travelers be careful and avoid walking in tourist districts at night in Spain, where there are many pickpockets.

When traveling on a long motorcycle trip, the most important thing to keep in mind is comfort. Accordingly, Mr Urzhumtsev recommends against embarking on a long journey on a sport bike. Take only the most necessary things with you, such as your visa, documents and money. Everything else can be bought along the road".

6th-May-2011 09:14 pm - South Africa, Safari Light.
Here it goes: some more about South Africa for tourists. The dealer center strongly recommended that I first tried the newly maintained bike somewhere in the vicinity. They did not spot the problem with the engine oil leaking which is why, to be on the safe side, we jointly decided it was better to make sure things were right somewhere in a civilized place. All the more so, the nearest place where you can have your BMW bike repaired is Kenya. I hear they have also opened another service center in Namibia. Still, if it is like the official dealer in Nairobi - forget it man.

One way or another, there was both time and need to make a small lap around South Africa. To make it both useful and pleasant, I decided to go for a Safari Light, drop in at my friend’s in George town and visit Knysna which last time had merely passed me by in the dark night. All the more, I got an earful of Knysna due to my South African friend Dave, an ex-driver of the Yamaha works team and a pretty successful developer.

6th-May-2011 08:47 pm - South Africa, Knysna.
This is Knysna, 330 miles away from Cape Town. Guided by my friend’s recommendation (I have already told you about him, this Yamaxa ex-driver) I did take the second shot and reached the place, in daylight and lovely weather. South Africans are terribly proud of the place; so much that they call it their ‘pearl on the beach’. Indeed, it is more likely to be one than not. The neighboring ocean and surrounding hills and lakes make the place strongly resemble the lakes of Switzerland (save the ocean☺). But how come you disregard the ocean if it offers you the richest sea-food assortment! And here is what my friend Vitaly told me upon learning that I got stuck in Cape Town because my bike needed maintenance: Why don’t you whisk off to Knysna to have some oysters? That is, Knysna oysters are the best oysters on the coast.

6th-May-2011 08:38 pm - South Africa, Cape Agulhas.
Here it is: Africa’s most southern point. For some reason, such places never fail to beacon. Here it goes: in 2009, I dragged my butt to Cabo da Roca, Portugal which is Europe’s most extreme point. Now is time to see Cape Agulhas, Africa’s most extreme one. As for South Africans, they call it either Gallas or Agulas. Many, still, mix it up with Cape Point. To me, I honestly believed that Cape Point is, actually, the most extreme point of the black continent. Not even close! The true most extreme point, however, is only fifty-something miles away from Cape Point. Not that it is more civilized there. The road that takes you to this long-desired place is unpaved, once you have passed the beacon. A pretty good unpaved road, that’s it. You can hardly find words to describe Agalas, you’ve got to feel it yourself. I did.

Last year, I distinguished myself by traveling from Barcelona to Moscow without any documents. This year, I have been experiencing some extreme things from a detective story.

I spent 3 days with guys from South Africa and Sweden waiting for our bikes and cars to arrive. It was a period of austerity measures for us since there were neither ATMs nor Western Union offices around. It did not concern the Russian resident alone. Our last supper in Wadi Halfa was exemplar: it consisted of chapati and water. I did show off, however, by having some tea. Therefore, we decided to set off together toward the capital (Khartoum). I had to return the money I had borrowed. Besides, it was way back in Egypt that I escaped the illusion that a man can travel more than a thousand miles a day across the desert.

If not the 44-45 degree heat then the endless checks will surely kill you.

4th-Jan-2011 06:42 pm - Nairobi National Park & Tijarabeach
I would not say that the Nairobi National Park is something really worth seeing. 40$ entrance fee and hour long search for any animals at all did not make me happy. All the more so, since it is not allowed to drive through the park on a bike I had to take a taxi. After 3 hours of our trip the driver somehow figured out that we had traveled long enough to bet paid $70. I had to brainwash him. After all, their pricing system is very funny: the first category are people of color who speak Swahili; they make the lowest budget category. The second category are, again, people of color who do not speak Swahili (there are 46 tribes in Kenya; every now and then people would speak the language of their tribe). The third category are white people who speak Swahili, and the fourth category are folks like me ☺ It also concerns the markets and small market shops. This rule applies everywhere except for large shopping malls and restaurants with foreign management.

After several hours of looking for animals we saw only аn awful lot of mzungus driving headlong through the park; a couple of eagles, a buffalo that was neither asleep nor alive, and some weird wild chicken that must have gotten away from a poultry farm and pretended to have been born in the wild, all busy and self-important. Look, guys! You’d better take a 218 mile drive and visit the Tsavo National Park.
